The data Nintendo gathers and shares with Google analytics when you purchase a game via the Nintendo Switch eShop is collected and shared with Google analytics. Despite the fact that Nintendo has been doing this for a long time, some consumers may be unaware of—or uncomfortable with—the practice.
What is the purpose of Nintendo sharing your eShop data?
Please understand that this is not at all unexpected, nor should it be seen as a cause for concern. If you've read any of our past coverage of similar data collecting and sharing methods, you'll be aware that there is only one motive for businesses to engage in such operations: profit maximization. Corporations are not monitoring you in order to keep track of things like "thought crimes" or anything like that. They just want to sell you something, and using data to do so is a convenient method of doing so.
Is Nintendo's eShop data protected from prying eyes?
In Nintendo's instance, Google Analytics is used to track what products users are purchasing, downloading, and looking for on the eShop website. Because this data is collected anonymously, none of your eShop purchases will be linked with your Nintendo or Google accounts unless you specifically request it. Nintendo explicitly says on the eShop settings page that the data you provide via the eShop is the only data Nintendo gathers and shares with Google Analytics. Any additional account information or Nintendo Switch activities is not tracked by the business.
Though done anonymously, data gathering may seem unavoidable, and it's strange to think of ourselves as nothing more than resources used by companies like Nintendo and Google for the purpose of making money.
